About The Trail

Founded by the Little River Rail Trail Trust

The Christchurch to Little River Rail Trail Trust was a registered charity that was formed in 2004. Its primary purpose was to promote, plan, fund, develop and establish a functional and high-quality interconnected network of trails for walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, and any non-motorized recreational activities covering the area from Christchurch to Little River. The Trust consisted of a small group of very dedicated volunteers who saw endless opportunities to further develop and promote the trail, and worked to grow and promote this wonderful recreational facility.

Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust

The Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust was approached by the Little River Rail Trail Trust with a proposal for them to take over the responsibilities of the Little River Rail Trail. When agreement was reached at the end of 2023 the original Rail Trail Trust was then wound up and the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust are delighted to now take over guardianship of this amazing Banks Peninsula icon.

Partnerships

There are four agencies that own and oversee the maintenance of various sections of the trail and we are grateful for the role they play in ensuring this great Banks Peninsula asset continues to be available for all to enjoy. Many thanks to the Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council, Department of Conservation and Environment Canterbury for all of your great mahi.
